Dan Marino Enshrined in Pro Football Hall of Fame
CANTON , OH – In the crowning moment of one of the most spectacular careers
in NFL history, Dan Marino was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame here today.
Marino was presented by his son, Daniel, who gave a moving tribute to his father
before a crowd of tens of thousands, most of whom were clad in Dolphin aqua, orange
and white.
In his
acceptance speech that followed, Marino thanked
his son, his own father and mother, his wife, Claire, and the rest of their family,
former Dolphins coach Don Shula, and several of his teammates on hand for the festivities,
including fellow Hall of Famer Dwight Stephenson, favorite pass receivers Mark Duper
and Mark Clayton, and his top back-up quarterback, Don Strock.
The great #13 finished in fitting fashion by completing his last pass as a pro to
Clayton in the audience. Marino, who retired a leader in virtually every major career
passing category (see statistics),
was joined in the Hall of Fame Class of 2005 by fellow modern-era QB great Steve
Young of the San Francisco 49ers, as well as Fritz Pollard and Benny Friedman, two
pioneers of the early NFL.
